Corriere dei Piccoli "Space-Surprise" Insert

Corriere dei Piccoli Anno  LXI N. 43 - 26 October 1969

From Paul: This four-page insert (next image) was stapled inside the regular pages of CdP N. 43 (together with a folded sheet of tear-off images depicting various sports). Because it contains two forms to be cut out and sent off, this insert is usually missing from the magazine as was the case with the first copy I obtained way back.

As will become apparent from the insert, the space surprise consisted of free membership of the Mattel Astrospace Club and receiving some MAC items though without the cap. As an extra surprise, one lucky kid could win a trip to Cape Kennedy and watch an Apollo launch. This may have been inspired by a contest with a similar prize having appeared that summer in Spirou magazine for their readers in France and Belgium. CdP published stories from the Spirou stable of artists so relations will have been cordial between these publishers.

The back page of the insert is about the benefits of the Corrierino Club, where the MAC offer is taken as an opportunity to promote the required CC membership.

THE MATTEL ASTROSPACE CORPS HAS ENTERED ORBIT

Directly from the United States, in collaboration with the Mattel Astrospace Center of Los Angeles (California), the Mattel Astrospace Corps, the most famous astrospace club for kids, has also arrived in Italy for Corrierino Club members.

Conquest of space. Spaceships rotating around our planet. Science fiction is from yesterday, the future has begun. Moon landing. Aldrin, Armstrong and Collins, and before them Gagarin and others. They are all terms and names that arouse intense emotions in each of us. Who among you did not watch the conquest of the Moon in front of the television last July and did not tremble for Armstrong. for his moment of indecision before touching the lunar soil? I think none or almost none.

We too, like you, spent an entire night in front of the television to witness this fantastic adventure, and we felt, enormous and very strong, the desire to be able to somehow participate in these great discoveries. In short, be part of it. Then we had an idea. You have all certainly learned to know, through the pages of the Corriere dei Piccoli, Matt Mason, the hero of many space adventures that even anticipate the events. Well, we knew that in America there was an Astrospace Club for kids linked to this character and we thought: why not give our members the opportunity to be part of this fantastic organization? We knew that it would be something that would interest everyone, both boys and girls, and now here it is: the Mattel Astrospace Corps has arrived in Italy too, exclusively for Corrierino Club members! How can you become a member of this club? It's very simple and, above all, it costs nothing. Just follow all the directions carefully.

The first thing you need to do to sign up for the Mattel Astrospace Corps is this. Please fill in the following participation form clearly and precisely, writing in block capitals if possible.

SPACE- TEST
  • Who was the first astronaut?
  • What is the name of the lunar module?
  • What number was the Apollo that went to the Moon?
The second thing to do is, however, to answer the questions in this space- test exactly. The answers must be correct, because only then will you be entitled to membership in the Astrospace Club. Tests that give incorrect answers or are received incomplete will be automatically eliminated.

To finish. Have you filled out the form? Did you answer the space-test correctly? Have you put aside the three club tokens published in the last three issues of Corriere dei Piccoli, namely: Matt Mason, Captain Lazer and Callisto? Good. Then take the participation form and the space-test that you have cut out, the three club tokens, put them in an envelope and send it to: Corrierino Club - Mattel Astrospace Corps - via Scarsellinì 17 - 20100 Milano. Attention. Registration for the Mattel Astrospace Corps is open exclusively to Corrierino Club members. It is essential to indicate the membership number on the participation form. However, if you have not yet received the card because your membership to our Club is recent, put "card not yet received". It is also essential to send the three required club tokens. In case you lost them, remember that you will find them on n. 5 of the ARDIMENTO ALBUM on sale from November.

Paul's Page 2 Notes:

The “car plate” note on the registration card refers to the two-letter abbreviation of Italian province names used on motor vehicle license plates at the time.

The Albi Ardimento (Albums of Daring) were a monthly series of complete (franco-belgian) comic stories published by Corriere dei Piccoli in 1969-71.
