Mattel #6341 Firebolt Space Cannon Super Action Set

#6341 Firebolt Space Cannon Super Action Set Box Front

This is an unusual "Deluxe" version of the Mattel #6340 Space Cannon, accompanied by three figures: Capt. Lazer, Sgt. Storm and Major Matt Mason. The box is rather large and spectacular with additional shots of the Space Cannon in Silver and White (as opposed to the actual Orange/Red and White plastic).

This boxed set is unusual in that it contains so many figures, especially with the inclusion of Capt. Lazer, who fit the insert in a seated position, with his legs under cardboard "hooks." Another odd convention is the use of a normal carded Major Matt Mason attached to the insert for the figure, and later the use of the Sgt. Storm Flight Card as the insert for Sgt. Storm (earlier versions of this playset contained a plain white card with Jet Propulsion Pak only - see "Figure Blisters" below for an image).

Included were: Firebolt Space Cannon with rotating antenna and space labels; Major Matt Mason with helmet and Cat Trac; Sgt. Storm with helmet and Jet Propulsion Pak (and optionally a sled and space labels, depending on version); and Capt. Lazer with helmet, boot tredders and three gun attachments. Instructions for the Firebolt and Lazer were also included.

Packaging:

The box is made of corrugated cardboard printed on all sides (in black, white and blue ink), except two sides which have an applied full-color, process-printed label (front and bottom). The box measures 18" by 15" by 6". Copyright is 1967. The box reads: "Firebolt Space Cannon - Rotating Radar Antenna - Flashing Radar Screen - Barrel Blazes - Solar Sound! - Moves Forward - Turret Rotates 360°; "Capt. Lazer - Major Matt Mason's Friend From Outer Space - Superhuman Lazer Powers Power-Charged Arm Activates Cosmic Coder...Radiation Shield...Lazer Wand...Cosmic Beacon - Flashing Eye & Chest Beams - Movable Arms - Bendable Legs - Space Helmet & Space Tredders - Powered by Two "AA" Batteries (Not Included)" and also "Complete with Maj. Matt Mason, Sgt. Storm and Capt. Lazer."

Variations:

  • The box art features a Firebolt with silver instead of red/orange plastic parts. Also, the stickers are different... it appears that Mattel made a running change prior to the release of the vehicle. The speculation is that the original "silver" parts were changed to something brighter that would appeal to kids more..
  • The Firebolt is alternatively referred to by Mattel as either a "Space Cannon" or "Space Lazer." Most later Mattel Catalog listings refer to it as "Space Lazer" or "Space Laser," which was also commonly used overseas.
  • Some boxes have been found with the box label misapplied so the top of the sticker is on the front, with the front of the sticker folded over the side (it's basically upside down).
  • The figures within have been found in two different versions: a Major Matt Mason cat trac card accompanied by either the white card shown above (holding a Sgt. Store plus Jet Propulsion Pak), or with a Sgt. Storm Flight Card, folded over and stapled to the insert.

John's Notes:

This set ranks with the Astro Trac Missile Convoy, the Space Station Space Crawler Deluxe Action Set, and the Space Discovery Set as my favorites. This is really an incredible set when viewed in Old-Store-Stock condition.
