EDITOR'S NOTES
First, let me introduce my self. My name is Alec Peters. I have been
collecting Matt Mason for just over two years. In that time I have not only
built a very nice collection, but I have met some wonderful people in the
hobby. Some of them include, Mark Stuart, John Eaton, Matt Scruggs, Ray
Kolasa and others. I am currently working on a MMM book, and am marketing
a
line of display cases for MMM items. I am always available for questions
from anyone, which I answer or seek of the sage wisdom of Mark or John. I
often have MMM items for sale on ebay and am always happy to help you in your
search!
The newsletter is meant for everyone, and I encourage people to e-mail me
with suggestions or items they would like included. I especially want all
the old, crusty MMM collectors to share their knowledge on specific items.

MMM FAKES!
When I recently purchased the ever elusive Gulf Promotional Major Matt Mason
piece from a collector in RI, I also purchased a C-10 Doug Davis MOC, and
a
C-10 Scorpio MIB.
The Scorpio and Doug turned out to be fakes! Both Mark Stuart and John Eaton
confirmed this. Mark, is, in my opinion, the foremost expert on Matt Mason
in the USA. He has been called in previously to authenticate carded items
that have proven to be fakes. John Eaton (john@wildtoys.com)
is a very savy
and experienced toy collector and MMM specialist. John and
Paul Vreede (pv@kan.be)
are putting a
great deal of info on John's site about fakes including pictures of the two
fakes I had.
SO BEWARE!
Below is detail of the fakes. Mark took photos with his digital camera and
they will soon be up on John Eaton's site. Here is what to look for.
Scorpio
- The box was obviously a color photo copy.
- The cardboard was half the correct thickness.
- The hole for the cello was not die cut, but rather cut with an exacto
knife. Look especially on the right where Scorpio's hand penetrates the
cello area.
- There was debris on Scorpio. Dust on his shoulder.
- The newness of the tape.
Doug Davis
- Poor paint job. Very shiney, over painted in areas, covered the Mattel info
on his back. This was similar to other fake figures that Mark Stuart has seen
and Mark says this figure was painted by the same hand that painted the other
fakes
- The card was a photocopy, both back and front. The back had misspelling
of
the word "separate", spelled serperate on the fake. And an additional line
of text below the legal on the back. The back also has the wrong picture.
Each Figure had a different photo on the back. This Doug has Sgt. Storm's
drawing in reverse. Mostly because it was a true line drawing, and not a
half tone like Doug's, so it could be easily copied.
- The bubble was scissor/square cut and new. The paint was incorrect color
and on the interior.
