Mattel #6386 Star Seeker Walk in Space Set

#6386 Star Seeker Walk in Space Set Box Front

A "Deluxe" version of the Star Seeker, this Sears Exclusive included a figure, wire armature and orange hose that allowed Major Matt to do space walks while the Star Seeker traverses the solar system. This appears to have been a Sears exclusive.

MMM Astronaut Major MATT MASON

MMM Star Seeker

Packaging:

The box is made of corrugated cardboard printed on all sides (in black, white and blue ink), except two sides which have applied a full-color, process-printed label (top and front). The box measures 12" by 12" by 10". Copyright is 1970. The box reads: "Stage Spectacular Walks in Space...Includes Major MATT MASON©, life support cables, 11 planets and STAR SEEKER." The box is surprisingly out of character (for Mattel) in that it lacks the usual slogans and feature descriptions (very different from the regular, unusual STAR SEEKER box).

Not Available. This was a Sears Catalog Exclusive, so it does not appear in regular Mattel Retailer Catalogs. It was probably described in some type of Sears Tear Sheet, and first appears on Sears Wishbooks for 1970 (Image and catalog listing tbu).

John's Notes:

This boxed playset is perhaps slightly less difficult to find than the Astro Trac Missile Convoy set released by Sears two years previous. Because it is a rehash of an existing vehicle, it does not command the prices of the Convoy Set (the only parts exclusive to this set are the orange hose, wire armature and instructions).

The vehicle portion of this playset may also be found in:
