Mattel #6362 Talking Major Matt Mason

#6362 Talking Major Matt Mason Box Front

One of the last Astronaut sets offered, the Talking Major Matt Mason was comprised an MMM figure accompanied by a string pulled "talking" toy, disguised as a flying backpack. The orange and silver plastic Voice Command Flight Pak would say various phrases as a figure was lowered via string (a similar arrangement to the Jet Propulsion Pak, but the talking action required the figure to be dropped instead of the back string pulled). Two legs extended from the Pak, giving the figure support while standing.

Included in this set are Major Matt Mason w/helmet and the Voice Command Flight Pak. Also included is a small sticker sheet and a warranty card for the talking mechanism (this "gold" warranty card appears to only be included in this set and Mattel #6378 Talking Flying Matt mason set). I've only seen this set to include a black-strap astronaut, and from the time-frame if its release, I'm not sure if any variations exist (other than foreign language versions).

Because of the cheap cardboard construction of the chip-box, this set is very difficult to find in mint to pristine condition. The end flaps were glued and usually ripped or cut, also the windowpane is often found ripped or missing. If the two insert pieces are missing, the box is most often found crushed.

John's Notes:

Almost impossible to find intact, the box is almost always crushed. Seems many of these ended up on the close-out shelves of toy stores, but because of the weak nature of the chip-box, most are bashed-in and/or may have the two windowpanes missing. The voice mechanism did not hold up well with time... the culprit is a rubber o-ring that turns into goo then disintegrates. Without it, the backpack will not speak.
