Mattel #6314 Major MATT MASON MASTER ASSORTMENT

Mattel Toys Fall 1967 "Toy Fair" Catalog Page 96

Mattel's Major Matt Mason Master Assortment was a truly inspired way to both receive and merchandise the MMM line. The assortment featured a large graphic header announcing the product, and eventually came accompanied with a stand-up astronaut (the image above is from the 1967 Toy Fair preview catalog and was changed in subsequent printings). Few of these have survived the ravages of time.

Packaging:

The assortment probably came in a plain cardboard box with Mattel logos and an assortment number printed on either end. Because the assortment came with the initial run of virtually every MMM piece, the carton would be sizable or more likely divided into several boxes.

NOTE: in the later catalog the images has been adjusted with the "free-standing astronaut figure" and colored.

Variations:

As noted above, the initial "Toy Fair" listing did not include the "free-standing astronaut" and seems to have had fewer items, even though the weights between it and the Fall catalog were the same.

John's Notes:

This first assortment was only offered in 1967. It was later reworked into Mattel Master Assortment A6326. Unfortunately, there is no way to know if the initial offering of this assortment only shipped with the merchandiser and not the stand-up. I find it odd that the second version had more items, including the stand-up, yet it weighs the same!
