Major Matt Mason - So what's it all about?

This page is dedicated to one of the most imaginative and "fun-to-play-with" toys ever - Major Matt Mason! As this line of toys was my favorite as a child, I felt compelled to add to the wealth of information presently on the Web. The Major Matt Mason line of toys was produced by Mattel from 1967 until the early 70's. It was extremely popular but its popularity diminished with the general loss of interest in the US space program, peaking shortly after the successful moon landing of Apollo 11 in 1969. Some of the molds shipped overseas and have surfaced under the Capitan Meteoro name produced by CIPSA in Mexico (boxes and text in Spanish). The range also sold in Europe as Major Matt in Great Britain and Major MATT MASON elsewhere, beginning in 1968 (initially through associations via Baravelli in Italy and Jouets Rationnels in France), although not all the later or more complex playsets may have been available in all countries.

Most of the items featured here are from my personal collection. I will add images and information as my collection expands. If anyone out there has any interesting information or images, please feel free to e-mail me. Happy hunting! John Eaton

The original Wildtoys.com pages were last updated on October 28, 2006, however I've made many additions while migrating the site to its new home hosted by blogger in 2022. I completed the migration of Wildtoys in December of 2003 and have many updates. Please check out the What's New Page for locations of new info and images.
