Snoopy Is Hit With Kiddies at Ward's Toy Area
Snoopy, that lovable World War One ace from Charles M. Schultz comic strip Peanuts. is the hit of Christmas, according to Fred Pierce, national catalog sales manager of the Montgomery Ward toy department.
"Out of all the toys in our 400-page Christmas catalog. the little Snoopy doll, complete with helmet, goggles and scarf. is the leader." says Pierce. The characters from the Peanuts comic strip, a Freeman comic feature, are featured on the cover of Wards catalog as well as in a two-page spread of toys inside.
With Christmas less than three weeks away, catalog sales of toys give a good idea of what is popular this year. For one thing, War toys are not popular. Following Snoopy, another comic strip character, Yogi Bear, in the form of a ball tossing game, is going to grace the Christmas scene of many homes across the nation.
As usual dolls are popular. The Barbie doll, now able to twist at the waist, is near the top. Barbie also has four new stewardess outfits designed by Emilio Pucci. Her boyfriend, Ken, is an airlines pilot.
A newcomer to the toy world is Major Matt Mason, who is making a name for himself. He is a spaceman and has a space sled, space station and space crawler. He is dressed in an official-looking space suit.
Other popular toys are the Princess pushbutton (sic) telephone, a friction car, walkie-talkies, road racer sets and games, games, games. Some of the more popular games are the Mousie Mousie, Twister, Operations (sic), The Great Escape, and Clue.
The tiny tots are going to enjoy the walking vegetables, Munchie Melon, Barnaby Banana and Corkie Corn - all silly, six-inch toys that walk around when you wind them up.
"It's going to be a fun Christmas for the kids," Pierce says, "according to catalog toy sales, with good old Snoopy flying high."
The local Ward store is located on Route 9W, Town of Ulster.
