This article "Space Toy Ready for Choosing" covers several Major Matt Mason attributes and equipment, stating that authenticity is important to "Boy in Space" - I haven't seen this article come up in other papers so it may have been written by a local staffer.

Space Toy Ready for Choosing

With all the attention being given Man In Space by science and technology, one might fear that another important aspect of space technology would be neglected Boy in Space.

One's fears would be groundless. Young pre-astronauts have available to them a whole lunar base full of space-suited comrades, all equipped, trained and ready for exploration of the galaxies.

They're a line of space personnel and materiel, led by the intrepid Major Matt Mason. This 6-inch-tall astronaut toy commands a detachment composed of Sgt. Storm, likewise 6 inch tall, and Captain Lazer, an extraterrestrial buddy of the Major's with an astonishing array of battery-powered talents. The captain, as befits a visitor from outer space, is a heroic 12 inches in height.

The authenticity of the space gear worn and used by Major Matt Mason and his team is such that official space agencies have used them as models of astronauts In static displays of space hardware.

That's important to the average Boy in Space, too. In all of his outerspace (sic) operations he demands that his equipment - and his astronauts - be rigorously realistic.

Among the realistic equipment available to Boy in Space are such technological triumphs as a Space Sled with Jet Propulsion Pak; a Cat Trak, for short-run vehicular work on the ground; a Moon Suit, with remote-controlled flexible arms, a two-piece radiation detector, and a set of tools; a Space Firebolt, and the Astro Trac terrain explorer (with astro-foam traction rear wheels).

Space probes with adjustable launcher, control console, decontamination gun, flare gun and binoculars are available, along with such essentials as a Space Shelter Pak (which protects the astronauts against violent space storms), Reconojet craft that fly by remote control on tension wires, a Satellite Launch Pak for launching four different communications satellites by remote control, a Space Crawler that uses a design suggested for actual use on rugged lunar terrain by Man in Space, and a Space Station.

That Space Station is really something, too. If it were bigger it could win an architectural award for Glass Houses. It serves the good Major and his Sergeant as a living area, observation tower and storage space. It's equipped with a Space Radar Beacon, too. Major Matt Mason always goes first class.

The closest thing to an actual interplanetary vehicle to get the Major, the Captain and the Sergeant into space is a storage case in the form of a space ship.

But don't be surprised if, before this decade is over, Major Matt Mason has a real space ship to get him to the moon. Wouldn't THAT be a surprise for the Russians!
