Joseph C. Brown with Custom Life-Sized MMM Suit
|
Submitted 2011.11.08 by Joseph C. Brown
Joseph Brown started posting images of this suit back in 2011, intending wear the suit for Halloween. I'm too fat to wear something like this but Joseph is thin enough to pull it off. He originally had his build notes available in Facebook Media (with a link) and a Picassa album but the links are now dead. Here are some notes from several subsequent posts, reordered a bit for clarity:

The Helmet
The helmet I built in 2011 is a 12" white acrylic globe which had a visor cut from 12" Clear globe. If I were to make another Major Matt Mason helmet, I would seriously consider keeping the 12" white globe, but cut the clear visor from a 14" Clear globe, because it would actually fit better (radius-wise) over the 12" white globe.

The neck ring portion of this is a chopped-up ten-inch paint bucket from Home Depot. It is needed for the lower section of the helmet and the piece that sits on the shoulders of the suit to hold the helmet in one place, preventing it from wobbling all over the head.
I used a long piece of soft aluminum wire to get the correct profile for
my shoulder near the neck, and then cut corresponding openings in a
white plastic bucket. White foam weather stripping for sealing windows
was cut to fit, and slit part way thru with a razor, and then applied
with hot-glue. This prevented it digging
This piece fits over the inner jumpsuit, and the outer jumpsuit zips up over it, and then (last!) the helmet goes on.
This
approach gives me a friction fit for the helmet very similar to what
the toy has, and by doing so, I also get a front chest profile that
likewise is close to the toy major Matt figure.
