From Japan in 1998 comes this mook called Figure King - issue 21 has a small section on Major Matt Mason (pages 18-19) including images of the two variations of the Mattel MMM catalog/folder (included in most boxed sets) and info on release dates. Translations and transcript below.

米マテル社の「スペースマン」は、当時のアメリカのアポロ宇宙計画に基づいて作られた精密な月面探検ミニチュア・アクション 玩具で、 6インチ(約15センチ) フィギュアの傑作である。1966年の本国デビュー以来、日本では約1年遅れの1967~1969年に輸入販 売され、アポロ11号の宇宙ブームのなかで、男の子たちの羨望の輸入玩具だった。 その全容は、本国アメリカのコレクター間でも完璧 には知られていないが、たぶん世界初となるオリジナルの製品カタログ 2年分を一挙にご紹介しよう。なお、このシリーズの製品別 の詳細記事は「帰ってきたフィギュア王」にカラー4ページで載せたので、興味のある人はバックナンバーをチェックしてみて。

Mattel's ``Spaceman'' is a detailed lunar exploration miniature action toy based on the American Apollo space program at the time, and is a masterpiece of a 6-inch (about 15 cm) figure. Since its debut in Japan in 1966, it was imported and sold in Japan from 1967 to 1969, about a year later, and was the envy of young boys during the space boom of Apollo 11. Although the full details are not fully known even among collectors in the United States, we would like to introduce you to the world's first original product catalog for two years all at once. In addition, detailed articles for each product in this series are published in 4 pages in color in ``The Return of the Figure King,'' so if you are interested, please check out the back issues.

The 1966 edition catalog marks the product's debut. A left-fold leaflet with color printing on both sides on a single B5 sheet. It's a left-hand fold, so the top right side is the front cover, and the left side is the back cover. Below that, on the double-page spread, is the main text that explains the product concept and worldview. 1967年版カタログ。 商品展開2年目の新製品が追加されている。 1966年版カタログに2ページが追加され、左三つ折りになった。 だから最上段右が表紙、中央が6ペー ジ、左端が5ページ目になる。その下は観音開きの中ページなので、 左から2、3、4ページである。 この1967年新製品は、 SFコミック的な雰囲気に変わり、 月の防衛戦争 がテーマになっている。 マット メイスン少佐の同僚 「ストーム軍曹」 (赤の宇宙服) と地球人に協力する巨人の宇宙超人 「キャプテン レーザー」 (青い宇宙巨人)が仲 間に加わり、 月に侵攻する赤い発光宇宙人 「スコルピオ」 (カタログ未掲載) を、 宇宙砲ファイヤーボルトで撃退するという設定だった。

1967 edition catalog. New products have been added in the second year of product development. Two pages were added to the 1966 catalog, which was folded into left tri-folds. Therefore, the top right is the cover, the center is page 6, and the far left is page 5. Below that are the middle pages, which are double-folded, so they are pages 2, 3, and 4 from the left. This new product for 1967 takes on a more sci-fi comic feel, with the theme being the War for the Defense of the Moon. Major Matt Mason's colleague ``Sergeant Storm'' (red space suit) and the giant space superhuman ``Captain Laser'' (blue space giant) who cooperate with the Earthlings join the team, and the red luminescent alien ``Scorpio'' invades the moon. '' (not shown in the catalog) was set to be repelled by the space gun Firebolt.

Some inaccuracies in this short article - Scorpio was never marketed as an invader or enemy - he's also not in any of the two insert catalogs (I'm not sure if he was released in Japan? - no evidence thus far)
