MAJOR MATT MASON
Mattel's Man in Space
With Major Matt Mason, Mattel's Man in Space, all boys experience the most exciting adventure of our time - the exploration of space.
The realistic space-toys (designed to closely follow NASA, the official US space programme) bring hours of pure joy.
- 6300 Major Matt Mason, 15 cm, DM 12.75. The adventurous astronaut flies with jet-assembly and space sled. His spacesuit is bendable at all articulation points.
- 6301 Moon-suit, DM 8.90 The Moon-suit protects Matt Mason (not included) from cosmic rays, when he leaves the Space Station.
- 6303 Major Matt Mason and Moon-suit. DM 19.75. Gift pack consisting of 6300 and 6301.
- 6305 Rocket-launch-base, DM 7.90. A fearsome defense weapon against any attacker from space.
- 6306 Satellite-launch-base, DM 7.90. Shoots satellites from the moon surface, to explore the stratosphere.
- 6319 Sergeant Storm with tracked vehicle, DM 9.90. Matt Mason's space companion with his (its?) robust tracks.
Paul's Notes:
- I've translated what it actually says in this catalogue, including the inaccurate description of NASA and what all the German names actually mean.
- 15 cm means the Major is 15 centimeters tall, equalling 6 inches.
- DM of course means Deutschmark. No idea what they were worth in 1968, but just before the Euro was introduced, DM 1 was roughly US$ 0.50 I think.

MAJOR MATT MASON
Mattel's Man in Space
- 6304 Space-spider, DM 39.50. A versatile vehicle, for which obstacles do not exist. Mounted on the Space Station it works as a powerful winch and crane. (Battery-driven, 2 1.5 volt batteries and Major Matt Mason not included.)
- 6307 Space-Probe-launchbase, DM 7.90. Intercepts dangerous asteroids and repels unfriendly space bodies.
- 6308 Space-Station, DM 59.-. Centre for all astronauts, that collaborate on researching the Moon. (Radar installation functions with a battery. - one 1.5 volt battery and Major Matt Mason not included.)
- 6320 Jet-Scout (reconnaisance jet), DM 8.90, with rotating radar antenna. Flies over the lunar surfaces and drags [pulls] space equipment.
- 6321 Space-tent, DM 7.90. An inflatable tent for all emergencies. Bottle with oxygen, map case and compass belong with it.
- 6330 Captain Laser, DM 29.50. The space-giant is Matt Mason's friend. He automatically lifts his right arm. Laser-pistol and eyes spray [emit] sparks and rays.
Paul's Notes:
- Captain Lazer's name is spelled with an "s" so that it is pronounced correctly in German. Spelled with a "z" in the american way, a German would pronounce it as "Lah-tzer".
- This Neuheiten catalogue presumably preceded the appearance of the 1968 German dealer catalogue, for it would have made little sense to have produced it otherwise. I think it was made to fill a gap while the Germans waited to have their own dealer catalogue adapted from the US version.
- The images from this Neuheiten catalogue are the same as those in the 1968 German dealer catalogue (and previously the 1968 US dealer catalogue), and contain some details that differ to those subsequently offered for sale. As described in our Prototypes section, the Sgt Storm figures shown here, the Cat Track and also Capt. Lazer are different in one way or another.
Mattel GmbH Neuheiten 1968 Order Sheet
Mattel GmbH Neuheiten 1968 Order Sheet (with MMM) |
Part of a set of four (the other two being exclusively devoted to
Barbie), these consist of 3 "carbonless"-copy-like layers each in
different colours.
One of them is headed Puppen und Spielzeug (Dolls and toys) and has the entire range of MMM then available in Germany, as well as the first Hot Wheels (Heisse Raeder) and ThingMaker sets (Mach-es-selbst) and a large variety of dolls.
This initial range consists of Matt, Storm and Lazer with the early carded accessories, Crawler and Station. What is most interesting is that both Matt and Storm are listed as being available both on flight card (and MMM with Moon Suit) as well as on Cat Trac at the same time.
Another interesting thing are the codes shown next to most articles, explained in the legend at top-right. A 'K' means the article is listed in the Konsumenten-prospekt (consumer prospectus - which will probably be the Neuheiten catalogue (described elsewhere), which shows exactly those MMM toys. (The German edition of the standard 6-page folder must have appeared later, since that shows other toys in the range such as the Firebolt).
"TV/FC" means the item is shown in a TV commercial, also available on film (presumably for showing at the local cinema?), which I assume would be a translated version of the first MMM commercial shown on Keith's website.
Finally a star means the item is a "must-have" for "Mattel specialist dealers" - eg a store would have to order a specified selection of Mattel toys regardless of the ones it would be interested in... Again of interest is that a toy store was required to order Matt and Storm on *all* the different cards they came on (flight card and cattrack card plus moonsuit card for Matt).
The other form is a list of promotional items to support various Mattel toy lines, and make me *most* curious! Available for free (Kostenlos) are the following:

The other form is a list of promotional items to support various Mattel toy lines, and make me *most* curious! Available for free (Kostenlos) are the following:
- 1-0007 - MMM shop window poster (Plakat in German, which may mean it was made from stiff card)
- 1-0008 - MMM figure, 140 cm tall, printed in full colour - Probably the large cardboard sales display
- 1-0009 - MMM Sales display stand - obtained free with a simultaneous order of DM 500 worth of MMM items - For that price I don't think this refers to the corrugated cardboard trays found in the bottom of a shipping box of cards... also listed is:
- 1-0010 (1-0011) Mattel Novelty Catalogue - for consumers - price 2 Pfennig (DM .02) net - I have no idea why there's two codes here. No codes appear on the Neuheiten catalogue itself, so that's no help...
